The Baby Signing Book: Includes 450 ASL Signs for Babies and Toddlers

By Sara Bingham. Illustrated by Jamie Villanueva

This second edition (9780778804512) replaces the first edition (9780778801634)

Now with 100 additional American Sign Language (ASL) symbols plus more case studies.

The interest surrounding baby signing continues to increase as more and more parents embrace this special world of communication, which allows babies to communicate before they can talk. Sign language gives them a way to express their wants and needs, easing frustration for both baby and parent. Being able to communicate effectively with a very young child is positively thrilling.

Part 1 of the book is an introduction to signing with babies and young children, providing the basic knowledge, skills and strategies to get started. Age-specific guidelines offer advice on signing with children from birth to age 3 and up.

Part 2 is a handy dictionary of 450 ASL signs, each clearly illustrated with tips on how to form and remember the signs.

Part 3 provides favorite songs and rhymes to sign with a child.

Special features include:

  • The top 5 signing tips
  • A program that parents can customize according to their family's needs Answers to frequently asked questions
  • Instructions on the 5 distinct components of ASL signs: body space, hand shape, movement, palm orientation, and facial expression
  • Age-specific advice on how to teach sign language as a child develops.
By simply following this book, a special world of communication awaits.

Before a baby can talk and before a toddler can say completely understandable words, they have important things to say. Babies and children are often more interested in connecting with parents or other caregivers than playing with their toys.

The Baby Signing Book uses American Sign Language, which is ideal for babies and toddlers because:
  • The ability of babies to understand what they see develops well before their ability to understand what they hear.
  • The ability of a baby to speak develops between the ages of 12 and 18 months, while the ability to use American Sign Language develops between 6 and 12 months.
  • Babies understand what they see much earlier than typically expected, and are able to sign well before they are able to talk.
The Baby Signing Book teaches parents more than 450 developmentally appropriate American Sign Language signs. With clear instructions for every sign, memory aid, song and game, the learning in this program is easy to follow and, most important, fun for all. Language milestones are charted throughout the book so progress can be charted. The book also features a variety of visual highlights that emphasize key concepts and interesting tips.

Adults can customize a program according to the family's needs and aspirations. With the dictionary of over 450 ASL signs, this handbook is clearly the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available.

I bought this book for my son to use with my grandson. Loved it so much that I bought a second one for the au pair to have too. !!!

We purchased several signing books to learn signs to teach our new baby and this one has become the favorite of the family. The visuals are great and easy to understand. The explanations are clear and easy to relate to the family - children and hubby alike. The journal aspect has proven to be one of my favorites as it allows you to note when you introduce the sign to the baby and when they first use it back to you.

Great book. Easy to read. Explanations and drawings are clear. I started signing to my 8 month baby right away.

Very clearly written with great current information on signing and introducing it to your child. Gives clear instruction on how to introduce basics of signing to your child at a variety of ages (I waited until my son was 6 months to get the book, but signing can be introduced even earlier according to the book). Illustrations of signs are easy to understand and come with memory references to help you recall the signs (i.e. the sign for "bath" is similar to making washing motions on your chest). I would recommend this book as a great basic guide and dictionary of signs for anyone wanting to introduce their children to this new skill.

I'm a speech therapist and although I work in early intervention and use sign language frequently, Sara Bingham's book, The Baby Signing Book has elevated my knowledge and has given me some extra tools to use with my little ones. I love all the unique ideas and creative songs to get a baby's attention to the signs. The ability to enhance language through sign is amazing! Thanks for the knowledge.
